Quiet Day

Edenham October 23rd

by Gill Graper

I had never been to Edenham; I had never participated in a Quiet Day; some might say that they never believed I could be quiet for so long amongst other people! Nine of us travelled to Edenham for the Quiet Day on Saturdsay 23rd October; nine of us took a journey where, by exploring the spirituality of Bishop Edward King, we were able to reflect on our faith and be refreshed in our search to consider what it might be to be 'Christlike Christians'.

Edenham is a delightful place combining a comfortable family home, a historically fascinating church, peaceful and attractive gardens and country walks and, to me best of all, an alluring place of charm and serenity - the Stable Chapel. This was where Canon Andrew Hawes helped to direct our thoughts and guide our reflections by enthusing on the subject of Bishop King, whose centenary is being celebrated this year.

The eucharist we shared before lunch and the service of Evening Prayer that closed the day seemed all the more meaningful and mystical set in the context of the day and in the Satble Chapel. Thanks go to Care and Nurture Group for encouraging us to go and to Father John for organising the event.

For someone who went with some trepidation on their first quiet day, I would fully recommend the experience. A chance to wander in such lovely surroundings; to sit and read or contemplate or even doze becomes a very precious memory in the hustle and bustle of daily life. DO COME THE NEXT TIME WE ARE OFFERED SUCH AN EXPERIENCE.
